Import and Export Compliance Consulting

UPS advises clients on the most current compliance initiatives developed by customs authorities for the trade community and assists them in evaluating current trade compliance levels. We can help you develop and implement plans to improve your company's trade compliance with national and international security initiatives, as well as regulations pertaining to specific goods.

  • AMPS Client Contravention History: The Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) is a civil penalty regime administered by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that secures compliance through the application of monetary penalties. The penalties are generally applied in a graduated way. Our Trade Consultants can request from CBSA a list of contraventions specific to your company that have been issued, closed or cancelled and provide an analysis to help your company avoid such penalties in the future as well as guide you through the next step recommendations to improve your compliance levels.

  • Import History Trade Activity: In today's environment of heightened security and compliance levels, having a working knowledge of your trade activity has never been more useful. Our Trade Consultants can request on your behalf all of your trade activity and compliance on previously imported goods. We can review and provide recommendations on duty reduction opportunities and compliance risks associated with the trade data as well as give you a "big-picture" analysis of your import operations for business planning.

  • Customs Import Compliance Verification: Importers are responsible for adhering to all customs regulations when importing into Canada. Many companies engaged in international trade are challenged with changes required to adapt their business practices to comply with the Customs Act and related legislation. The CBSA assesses this compliance expectation with a system of audits and penalties. Our Trade Consultants can keep you ahead of the learning curve by reviewing international trade processes, examining company linkages between purchasing, receiving, accounts payable and customs departments to mirror your company's current processes to Canadian customs requirements.

  • Customs Export Compliance Verification: Customs administration demands, supply chain complexities and new exporting requirements have left exporters challenged to keep uninterrupted exports flowing. Our Trade Consultants can review export processes and documentation completion while educating and sharing industry best practices for efficiency and compliance.

  • Trade Policies and Procedures: A government initiated customs compliance verification (e.g. an audit) is a review of a company's internal controls and processes. Maintaining a comprehensive and effective manual can reduce the scope of a customs compliance verification audit. Our team can help you put in place the processes required to ensure that any audit does not find significant compliance issues. We can also help to make the audit process less time-consuming and less intrusive by proactively coordinating the activities of all the company's departments with a role in the import process (e.g. purchasing, receiving, distribution centres, accounting/finance and logistics) and providing an exchange of information between these departments. Our Trade Consultants will document the current procedures and processes to ensure compliance with customs valuation, reported quantity, proper classification, origin of goods, record keeping requirements and other legal requirements.
